2048 is a single-player sliding tile puzzle game developed by Gabriele Cirulli. Merge tiles with the same power of 2 to get the total sum. The goal is to keep merging tiles this way until you reach 2048!

My kids enjoy the simple challenge of merging the numbers to clear space and stay alive. It’s great to see them figure out strategies to merge bigger and bigger numbers efficiently. They don’t realize it, but they are learning to make quick additions. There’s also a lot of geographical thinking ahead to avoid making a move that gets you stuck.

How to Play 2048

The game begins on a simple 4x4 grid, with two numbered tiles appearing at random spots. Each tile is either a 2 or a 4. You will need to slide these tiles around the board and merge matching numbers until you eventually create the ultimate 2048 tile. It's not easy at first, but once you discover the patterns and better understand the rules of the game, you will find a solid rhythm you can keep going back to.

Moves are easy to make. All you need to do is swipe or press the arrow keys to slide the tiles in one direction or another. Note that every move you make shifts the entire board; this means that all tiles travel until they hit either the wall or another tile.

If two tiles of the same number collide, they merge into a single tile with double the value. For example, a 2 and a 2 combine to form a 4, two 4s become an 8, and so on. After each move, a new tile, again a 2 or a 4, appears on the board, slowly filling up the empty spaces.

Use your arrow keys to move all the tiles in the specified direction. Note that every time you move, another two are spawned into the game. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one, doubling the value.

Consider your movements and avoid sliding tiles around haphazardly. Strategy is key in this game. The board keeps filling up each time you move! If the board fills all the way without you reaching 2048, it's game over.

The challenge is pretty much keeping the board from filling up completely. If there are no more moves left (no empty spaces and no adjacent matches), the game is over. The further you go, the more challenging it becomes to manage the board, as high-value tiles start to crowd out smaller numbers you still need for merging.

Keep your higher-value tiles tucked away in one corner, build around them, and resist the temptation of false merges. Think a few steps ahead: merging a pair might look good now, but it could also block future moves.

What is 2048?

2048 is an open-source puzzle game with math elements where players slide numerical tiles around a grid to create larger numbers. The game took the world by storm in March 2014 when it was released, surprising the developer who had made it in just a weekend.

Thanks to the open-source project, many variations have been created and distributed since then. The 2048 game on this page is the original, but you can find more versions below.

History of 2048

When 2048 first made its way onto the game scene, it may have seemed familiar to some players. The game drew its inspiration from Threes, an iOS game released around the same time. According to a post in The Guardian, Gabriele Cirulli, the creator of 2048, openly acknowledged the similarity, stating, "Threes is the reason 2048 exists". The clones soon started pouring in, but 2048's gameplay seemed to have created a loyal following, leaving its imitators in its wake.

Tips & Tricks

  • Focus on the edge of the grid. You want the highest number in a lovely corner for easy access.
  • Keep making the larger numbers around that corner so you can combine them when they match.
  • If you end up with the higher numbers towards the middle, you can quickly get lost with inaccessible numbers, and eventually, you will have to start a new game.
